Swimming Lessons

PRIVATE LESSONS

The Westleigh Swim Coaches offer private or semi-private lessons to all pool members. The coaching staff has experience teaching everyone from the bubble-blowing beginners to adults who want to swim for fitness. One-on-one instruction with an experienced coach and swimmer is a great way to overcome water anxiety.
Lessons usually run for 30 minutes and the cost ranges from $14-$20, depending on the experience of the instructor. All scheduling is done in the blue binder on the table in the entrance hallway. To sign up, simply write the name of the child (or adult!) and a phone number where you can be easily reached. Please note that instructors need 24 hours notice for cancellations unrelated to weather, pool closings, or emergencies.

GROUP LESSONS

Another lesson option available at Westleigh is the group program. Group lessons usually consist of 8-10 swimmers and 2 coaches as instructors. Group lessons run in two week sessions, with 8 half hour lessons (Mon-Thurs). Session dates will be available on the hallway bulletin board around Memorial Day. Group lessons are a fun and affordable way ($50 for 8 lessons) to introduce a child to basic swimming and water safety. On the first day of each session, the coaches will divide the kids into groups based roughly on the following guidelines:

Beginner A: Kids usually have never had any swim lessons and are reluctant to put their heads underwater. Lessons will focus on blowing bubbles, pool safety, floating, kicking, going underwater, and gaining overall confidence in water ability.

Beginner B: Swimmers at this level should be comfortable going underwater and be able to take their feet off the bottom and swim a little. Lessons will focus freestyle, treading water, backstroke, pool safety, and overall confidence in water ability.

Advanced Beginner: Swimmers at this level should be able to swim at least 10 meters of freestyle, float alone on their back, and swim comfortably in 3.5 feet of water. These lessons are most often used for swimmers not quite ready for the Pre-Team. Lessons focus on proper freestyle breathing, backstroke, breaststroke, treading water, and introduce the concept of diving.

Questions about either of the lesson programs should be directed to the coaching staff.
